IT Support Case Study: City Printing London
City Printing are a North London based company established for over 25 years who offer
printing and design services such as leaflets, brochures, business cards etc. A
network was already in place but this had reached its limit in terms of data capacity.
IT Support Brief
With an ever growing customer base City Printing had reached there storage capacity
with their existing server network. The server had already had drive capacity added
and had no further possibility for expansion. The server was also using the Windows
NT operating system and was struggling to server the documents at an acceptable
speed. The network was made up of existing PC's and Apple Mac's of varying ages
and operating systems. PC Docs was asked to come up with a solution.
They requested a system to provide the following:
- Install a new server that was able to cope with a large number of Quark Express
and Photoshop files and serve them at a fast speed
- A server that had large capacity drives and also the ability to be added to in the
future if necessary.
- A large capacity back-up solution that required minimal user interaction other than
changing the tapes
- The existing server to be used for old data that needed to kept for potentially
returning customers
- Enable all PC's and Mac's to use the internet
- All users to have their own unique email address and be set-up on the varying email
clients
- One PC to be set-up to receive all company emails in the event that an employee
was not in work
IT Support Proposal
As a server we proposed a powerful Dell PowerEdge 830 Server with a large As discussed,
we recommend a Pentium 4 based Dell Server with Windows Server 2003 as an operating
system. This will give a localised storage centre for all documents and files. Also
Windows Server 2003 has all the features needed to work with Apple Macs built-in.
The server has 3 large capacity hard drives which allow it to be configured as RAID5
- the data can be read/written simultaneously on/from all drives to improve the
speed and redundancy of the system.
As all data and documents are stored in one place it means that back ups can be
done from one point on a daily basis. The back up will be configured using Veritas
Back Up Executive that we have found to be one of the most reliable back up software
currently available. It is capable of sending you an email of the status of the
previous nights back up. We recommend that you have a total of 10 tapes that you
will use on a daily basis (5 days), this will always give you 2 weeks worth of back
ups in hand in the event that you need to restore a file back to a previous state.
For defence against viruses, we recommend Sophos Small Business Edition. This protects
your server and workstations constantly scanning them. It updates itself by checking
with the Sophos Servers every half an hour for updates. The files that are downloaded
are the smallest in the industry therefore taking up as little broadband speed as
possible. The files are received by the server that then proceeds to update the
workstations. Again, this negates the need for each workstation to download the
same file.
IT Support Contracts
WFA agreed to the whole proposal. The work was carried out in 2 stages. The first
stage included hardware installation (including cabling). The second stage was to
copy all the data from old PCs to the server, set up SAGE and ordering software
and set up telephone/fax system.
WFA also extended the
Level 3 IT Support contract
including our Pro-Active Network Monitoring plug-in for the following 2 years which
includes maintaining the ordering software.
