IT Support Case Study: Chris Bake, London
Mr Chris Bake is London based international oil trader who frequently works in the Middle East.
IT Support Brief
Mr Chris Bake required the ability for his London based assistant to have access to documents and emails from her home location. He also needed to have access to these same files and also emails.
They requested a system to provide the following:
- Install a server able to deal with emails, faxes, ordering
- Propose a new multi-screen PC to be based in London
- Propose a new all-in-one networked laser printer with the capability to produce colour
- Provide a reliable and easy to maintain backup system
- A single anti-virus and anti-spam solution
- The ability to check emails from any internet based PC in the world
- A wireless network to allow access to the network from the 5 storey house
IT Support Proposal
As a server we proposed a Dell PowerEdge machine with a large capacity backup tape drive. We opted for large capacity SATA hard drives set up as Raid 1 to provide redundancy whilst keeping the costs down. The best operating system for the server would be Windows Small Business Server 2003 which integrates the most important parts of the system into one box. This allows the server to handle all emails and faxes without the need for any 3rd party software. For an anti-virus/spam solution we again recommended Sophos, with the server installed control panel it is possible to see the current status of all PC on the network at a glance. To control incoming faxes and emails we used the integrated features of Small Business Server 2003. For additional security a Cisco PIX firewall was installed and configured. A Dell OptiPlex PC was installed with two 20 inch UltraSharp LCD monitors to provide ease of viewing multiple documents. For the wireless we installed two Netgear access points throughout the levels, this gave good connection strength for all the floors.
For extra protection a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) was added to prevent damage to the server in the event of a power cut or power surge.
IT Support Contracts
Mr Chris Bake agreed to our proposal. The work was completed in two working days including the copying of existing data to the server and shared with correct security rights and permissions. Mr Chris Bake signed a 1 year contract for our
Premier IT Support level offering a complete one cost solution for hardware and everyday issues.
